La Brévine ist als “Sibirien der Schweiz” bekannt, das zugehörige Vallée de la Brévine ist quasi die Mutter aller Kaltluftseen in der Schweiz. Hier wurde am 13. Januar 1987 mit -41.8 °C die bisher tiefste in einer bewohnten Ortschaft gemessene Temperatur registriert. Unter heutigen Messbedingungen (aktiv ventilierte, automatische Messung anstelle eines Flüssigkeitsthermometers in einer Klimahütte) wird für dieses Datum gar ein Minimum von -42.5 °C abgeschätzt (vgl. https://www.meteoschweiz.admin.ch/home/klima/klima-der-schweiz/rekorde-und-extreme.html generelle Hinweise zum Thema Homogenisierung finden sich in ).
Lage
Das Vallée de la Brévine liegt im Neuenburger Jura an der Grenze zu Frankreich. Die Talachse des Kaltluftsees erstreckt sich über mehr als 20 km bei Chincul Redard bis Le Quartier in der Nähe von La Chaux-du-Milieu. Die Breite des Kaltluftsees beträgt an der Oberfläche zwischen 1 und 2 km. Im Nordwesten wird das Vallée de La Brévine durch die Larmont-Kette flankiert, welche über weite Strecken die Landesgrenze zu Frankreich bildet und Höhen zwischen 1120 und 1260 m.ü.M. erreicht. Die südöstliche Begrenzung wird durch die Höhenzüge Les Cronées – Bois de la Baume – Les Fontenettes – Crêt du Cervelet – Haut des Joux – Grand Sommartel gebildet. Beim Grand Sommartel erreicht die Kretenlinie mit 1337 m.ü.M. ihre grösste Höhe, ansonsten bewegt sie sich in einem Bereich zwischen 1120 und 1300 m.ü.M.
Entstehung
Beim Vallée de la Brévine handelt es sich um ein Karstphänomen, welches als Polje (n., slavischer Ursprung für “Feld”) bezeichnet wird. beschreibt dieses Phänomen als “grosses, geschlossenes, meist steilwandiges (Anmerkung: diese Eigenschaft ist im Vallée de la Brévine nicht erfüllt) Becken mit ebenem Schüttungsboden und elliptischem oder plolygonalem Umriss.” Bedingt durch die Dominanz karstischer Lösungsprozesse ist die unterirdische Entwässerung ein charakteristisches Merkmal von Poljen. Als prinzipiell mögliche Entstehungsgründe werden das Zusammenwachsen von Dolinen bzw. Uvalas oder die chemische oder mechanische Aufweitung tektonischer Schwächezonen angegeben. Im Falle des Vallée de La Brévine ist im Zuge der Auffaltung des Juras eine Brachysynklinale entstanden: So wird der nach unten gerichtete Teil einer Falte bezeichnet, deren Längsachse von ihren äusseren Rändern zur Mitte hin sanft abfällt. Es resultiert eine geschlossene Mulde ohne oberirdischen Abfluss. Das Wasser, welches durch diverse Ponore (z.B. des Le Bied) sowie über den Lac des Taillères im Untergrund versickert, wird über die Areuse zum Neuenburgersee hin abgeführt.

Das Vallée de La Brévine ist nach dem Vallée de Joux sowohl hinsichtlich des Volumens als auch seiner Fläche der zweitgrösste Kaltluftsee der Schweiz. Die grosse Ausdehnung und die geringe Horizontüberhöhung führen zur einem ausserordentlich hohen Sky View Factor, welcher Werte nahe 1 annimmt.
Der knapp 2 km lange, 200 – 300 m breite und etwa 4 m tiefe Lac des Taillères westlich von La Brévine friert im Winter regelmässig zu. Durch seine Entfernung (ca. 2 km) von der Messstation darf der Einfluss auf die Temperaturminima auch im Sommerhalbjahr als gering erachtet werden.
Der tiefstgelegene Sattel befindet sich am nördlichsten Punkt des Kaltluftsees im Bereich der Kantonsstrasse nach Le Locle. hat im Rahmen seiner Diplomarbeit durch Radiosondenaufstiege gezeigt, dass die Mächtigkeit der Inversion auf bis zu 150 m (entspricht einer Obergrenze von 1185 m.ü.M.) anwachsen kann. An verschiedenen Stellen liegt die Obergrenze der Inversion somit über der Kammlinie des Vallée de la Brévine. Die Vermutung ist somit naheliegend, dass sich der Kaltluftsee nicht nur im Bereich des niedrigsten Sattels, sondern an weiteren Stellen in die Nachbartäler ergiesst.
Messungen
In der Einleitung der “Annalen der Schweizerischen Meteorologischen Central-Anstalt 1896” wird auf die damalige Erweiterung des Stationsnetzes eingegangen:
“Ein neuer Beobachtungsposten trat mit Anfang des Jahres in Châtagne bei la Brévine in Funktion. Beobachtungen aus diesem höchstgelegenen neuenburgischen Jurathal, das sieh durch tiefe Temperaturminima auszeichnet, liegen allerdings schon aus den Jahren 1872 und 1878 vor, während welchen in La Brévine selbst meteorologische Aufzeichnungen gemacht wurden. Die jetzige Station wird von Mme J. Matthey-Maire besorgt, welche sich als frühere Lehrerin und Beobachterin auf Chaumont in vorzüglicher Weise dazu eignet.”
Wie dies bei manuell betriebenen Stationen, deren Betreuung durch Privatpersonen und nicht durch Institutionen sichergestellt wird, praktisch unvermeidlich ist, ergeben sich bei Beobachterwechseln immer wieder Stationsverschiebungen. Die gesamte Messreihe überblickend ist es wohl angebracht, von der Messreihe des Vallée de La Brévine zu sprechen: La Châtagne liegt knapp 3 km ENE von La Brévine, die Höhe der Messstation wird in den Annalen mit 1080 m angegeben. Der damalige Messstandort liegt also 40 m höher als der heutige in der Nähe der Kirche von La Brévine. schreibt dazu:
Les données de la station météorologique qui se trouve à environ 1080 m. d’altitude, soit à 40 m. au-dessus du fond de la vallée, sont des moyennes trop extrêmes pour les Bayards ou les Verrières, trop modérées pour la Brévine même.
Zudem war seinerzeit eine Fassadenaufstellung des Wetterhäuschens aus Blech an der Nordwest-Seite des Hauses üblich. Diese beiden Punkte erklären einen guten Teil der recht unspektakulären Jahresminima (z.B. -17.5 °C im Jahr 1896 oder -15.4 °C im Jahr 1897). Eine erste Verschiebung innerhalb von La Châtagne erfolgte 1932. Bedeutender war hingegen die Verlegung der Station fast 6 km Richtung WSW nach Les Taillères. Auch hier erfolgte die Temperaturmessung in einem an der Nordseite des Hauses auf etwa 5 m Höhe über Boden angebrachten Wetterhäuschen. Bedingt durch den Stellenwechsel und den Umzug der Beobachterin nach La Brévine wurde die Station 1957 zur Kirche in La Brévine verschoben. Seit diesem Zeitpunkt wurde die Aufstellung der Temperaturmessung räumlich nur noch geringfügig verändert. Bei der Interpretation der Messwerte ist hingegen der Ersatz der Blechhütte mit Hausaufstellung durch eine freistehende Stevenson-Hütte im Jahr 1964 relevant. Am 1.1.1997 wurde die Klimastation aufgehoben und mit einer ENET-Station, an welcher der Wind sowie mit einem Thygan die Temperatur und die Feuchte gemessen wurden, brach das Zeitalter der automatischen Messungen an. Nach einem kurzen Messunterbruch wurde die SMN-Station La Brévine am 14.08.2013 offizialisiert. Diese Station besteht aus zwei Messfeldern:
- Die Hauptstation, wo alle Parameter (Druck, Temperatur, Globalstrahlung, Niederschlag, Wind) gemessen werden, befindet sich nördlich des Sportplatzes im dreiecksförmig eingefassten Messfeld am Strassenrand auf einer Höhe von 1050 m (Bildmitte):
- Am abgesetzten Nebenmessfeld beim Bächlein mit dem Namen “Le Bied” wird die offizielle Temperatur von La Brévine gemessen (Kreisförmig freigemähte Wiese um die Installation herum in der Bildmitte):
Das Bächlein wird kurz oberhalb der Station eingedohlt und unter dem Dorfkern hindurch geleitet, wo es anschliessend nach kurzem Fliessweg in einem Schluckloch verschwindet. Zu früheren Zeiten befand sich im Bereich der Temperaturmessung ein Mühleweiher, der heute trockengelegt ist. Mit dieser Disposition weist dieses Messfeld eine erhöhte Hochwassergefährdung auf, andererseits ist diese Muldenlage günstig für das Auftreten sehr tiefer Temperaturen.
Man würde im Vallée de La Brévine wahrscheinlich Standorte finden, an welchen noch tiefere Minima als am aktuellen Standort auftreten können. Interessant wären zum Beispiel Vergleichsmessungen in der lokalen Senken bei Le Pré Berthoud, der tiefsten Stelle zwischen La Brévine und dem Lac des Taillères oder in einer der lokalen Senken südwestlich von La Grosse Maison. Diese Suche nach dem absolut möglichen Minimum war jedoch nie ein vordringliches Anliegen bei der Platzierung der Messstation. Früher waren vielmehr praktische Gründe massgebend für die Aufstellung. Allgemein folgten die Stationen den Beobachtern (was im übrigen bei den manuellen Niederschlagsmessstationen auch heute noch der Fall ist), heute kann durch die automatische Messung der langfristigen Vergleichbarkeit eine höhere Priorität eingeräumt werden.
Insgesamt erstaunt es angesichts der Stationsgeschichte von La Brévine nicht, dass aus der Messreihe in der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts keine Minima von unter -40 °C vorhanden sind. Das bedeutet nicht, dass ausserhalb an anderen, günstigeren Stellen nicht tiefere Minima registriert wurden:
Le village de la Brévine, qui occupe le fond de la vallée, est plus froid que les coteaux voisins. Ainsi, au commencement de décembre 1925, les minima ont été : à la Brévine (1045 m.) —40°, au Cerneux-Péquignot (1090 m.) —32°, à la station de la Châtagne — 30°. Ce fait de l’inversion des températures dans les vallées fermées est du reste bien connu. Le minimum extrême certain paraît avoir été au village de —41° en février 1895 (P. Matthey-Doret).
Die tiefsten, nicht homogenisierten Werte stammen aus den Jahren 1968 mit -40.5 °C, 1985 mit -41.5 °C und 1987 mit -41.8 °C.
Es sei an dieser Stelle noch auf eine Beobachtung in zu den täglichen Temperaturschwankungen verwiesen, welche in Kaltluftseen ausserordentlich stark ausfallen können:
Les variations intraquotidiennes sont souvent frappantes. Il n’est pas rare de voir une gelée blanche faire suite à une chaude journée d’été. Il y a du reste mieux : le 1er janvier 1875, à 7 h. 30, le thermomètre marquait à la cure de la Brévine — 40°, et à midi il pleuvait.
Im Rahmen eines Forschungsprojektes der Universität Neuenburg sowie der Forschungsanstalt für Wald, Schnee und Landschaft WSL wurde projektbezogen zwischen Dezember 2014 und Februar 2015 ein aus 44 Temperatur-Datenloggern bestehendes Messnetz betrieben, um die Bildung des Kaltluftsees genauer zu untersuchen .
