Geomorphologische Faktoren

Neben der variablen meteorologischen Disposition (Windstille, klarer Himmel, lockere Neuschneeschicht, möglichst kalte Luftmasse) gibt es auch eine statische Disposition, welche durch die Geländeform gegeben ist. Bei den folgenden Betrachtungen beschränken wir uns auf die geschlossenen Geländesenken ohne oberirdischen Abfluss. Gegenüber den offenen Kaltluftseen weisen diese im Bereich des tiefsten Punktes, wo die kälteste Luft zu liegen kommt, keinen Kaltluftabfluss auf. Sie sind somit für das Auftreten von extrem tiefen Temperaturen begünstigt.

zeigen in ihrer Arbeit, in welcher die Temperaturverläufe in fünf benachbarten und sehr unterschiedlich geformten Senken verglichen werden, dass ein hoher Sky View Factor den besten Erklärungsansatz für sehr tiefe Temperaturen liefert. Andere Grössen sind von untergeordneter Bedeutung.

Die nachfolgend aufgeführten Faktoren werden auch in diskutiert:

    • Tiefe der Senke: Als Tiefe der Senke wird die Höhendifferenz zwischen dem tiefsten Punkt der Senke und dem niedrigsten Überlaufpunkt bezeichnet. Häufig wird angenommen, dass die Tiefe einer Senke einen direkten Zusammenhang mit den möglichen Tiefsttemperaturen hat. Auf der Glattalp, wo am 7. Februar 1991 mit -52.5 °C der tiefste in den letzten Jahrzehnten gemessene Temperatur in der Schweiz registriert wurde, beträgt die Höhendifferenz zwischen der Messstation und dem Überlaufpunkt des Kaltluftsees jedoch nur gerade 16 m. Je mächtiger ein Kaltluftsee jedoch ist, desto beständiger ist er tendenziell.
    • Fläche des Kaltluftsees: Die flächenmässig grössten Kaltluftseen in der Schweiz befinden sich im Jura. Auf der Höhe des Überlaufpunktes weist der Kaltluftsee des Vallée de Joux eine Fläche von 32.4 km², derjenige vom Vallée de la Brévine eine Fläche von 30.5 km² und derjenige vom Vallée des Ponts eine Fläche von 20.3 km² auf (Grundlage der Auswertung: DHM25/swisstopo). Die tiefsten bekannten Temperaturen im Schweizer Jura stammen jedoch aus der Combe des Amburnex am Rande des Vallée de Joux. Dieser Kaltluftsee weiste eine Fläche von nur  3 km² auf.
    • Volumen des Kaltluftsees: Auch bezüglich des Volumens befinden sich die grössten Kaltluftseen der Schweiz im Jura. An der Spitze steht das Vallée de Joux (1.13 km³), gefolgt vom Vallée de la Brévine (0.93 km³), vom Vallée des Ponts (0.47 km³) und vom Kaltluftsee zwischen Les Breuleux und Tramelan ( 0.16 km³). Alle anderen Senken ohne oberirdischen Abfluss weisen ein Volumen von weniger als 0.1 km³ auf. An der Station La Brévine werden bekanntermassen sehr tiefe Temperaturen (-41.8 °C) gemessen, aus dem Vallée de Joux wird ein Minimum von -41 °C im Jahr 1888 erwähnt . Auch in den beiden anderen erwähnten Kaltluftseen ist von absoluten Minima von deutlich unter -30°C auszugehen (ohne dass dies durch Messungen belegt wäre). Für die extremsten bekannten Minima zeichnen jedoch mit der Glattalp (Volumen = 0.008 km³) und der Combe des Amburnex (Volumen inkl. Sèche de Gimel = 0.04 km³) Kaltluftseen verantwortlich, welche ein um Grössenordnungen kleineres Volumen aufweisen.
    • Horizontüberhöhung / Sky View Faktor: Bei klarem Himmel und trockener Luft ist die langwellige Gegenstrahlung minimal und sehr viel kleiner als die langwellige Ausstrahlung der Erdoberfläche. Die Strahlungsbilanz auf dem Boden einer Senke wird dann optimal für die Ausbildung von intensiven Kaltluftseen, wenn die umliegenden Hänge möglichst flach und die Berge nicht allzu hoch sind. Diese Horizontüberhöhung kann durch den Sky View Factor (SVF) beschrieben werden. Als Referenz dient dabei eine Ebene: hier ist die gesamte obere Himmelshälfte (Hemisphäre) sichtbar, der Sky View Factor beträgt 1. In einem engen Tal, welches von hohen Bergen umgeben ist, sind nur noch Teile der oberen Hemisphäre sichtbar: der Sky View Factor ist kleiner als 1. Der Sky View Factor ist eine Grösse, welche kontinuiertlich für jeden Punkt auf der Erdoberfläche berechnet werden kann. Der Sämtisersee weist im Bereich des Talbodens einen SVF von etwa 0.85 auf (sprich: 85% des Himmels sind sichtbar und nicht durch umliegende Berghänge verdeckt), der Fälensee von etwa 0.65. Dieser Unterschied wird anschaulich, wenn die Kugelpanoramen des Sämtisersees und des Fälensees verglichen werden. Auf der Glattalp wird ein SVF von etwa 0.9 erreicht, in den Kaltluftseen des Juras treten Werte von über 0.95 auf – was durch die gegenüber den Alpen sanfteren Geländeformen erklärt werden kann.
    • Reliefenergie: Kaltluft wird nicht nur unmittelbar im Kaltluftsee selber gebildet, sondern fliesst aus den umliegenden Hängen des Einzugsgebietes zu. Das Einzugsgebiet eines Kaltluftsees ist deckungsgleich mit dem oberflächlichen hydrologischen Einzugsgebiet. Die Reliefenergie als Mass für die Höhendifferenzen im Einzugsgebiet wirkt sich in verschiedener Hinsicht auf die Tiefsttemperaturen in einem Kaltluftsee aus:
      • Die Reliefenergie ist eng mit dem Sky View Factor korreliert (wobei die Ausdehnung des Einzugsgebietes zu berücksichtigen ist): Von zwei Kaltluftseen, welche bezüglich Form und Grösse des Einzugsgebietes identisch sind, weist derjenige einen höheren Sky View Factor auf, welcher die geringere Reliefenergie hat.
      • Eine hohe Reliefenergie führt dazu, dass höhere Kaltluftabflussgeschwindigkeiten auftreten. Dies führt dazu, dass die oberste Schicht des Kaltluftsees turbulent durchmischt und somit gestört wird. Auf die untersten Schichten ist, vor allem bei Mächtigkeiten von mehreren Dekametern, kein Einfluss zu erwarten.
      • Hohe Bergflanken, welche im Süden des Kaltluftsees liegen, können durch ihre Abschattung im Winterhalbjahr begünstigend wirken, indem die Auflösung der Inversion durch die fehlende Einstrahlung erschwert wird. Andererseits führt diese Konstellation dazu, dass synoptische Windsysteme (z.B. Föhn) den Kaltluftsee rascher erodieren lassen.
    • Höhenlage der Senke: Im Schnitt nimmt die Lufttemperatur mit der Höhe um 0.65 Grad pro 100 m Höhendifferenz ab . Durch die bereits beschriebenen Prozesse kann eine Luftmasse im Bereich eines Kaltluftsees stark abgekühlt werden. Die Temperatur kann Werte annehmen, welche weit unter denjenigen liegen, welche üblicherweise in einer bestimmten Höhenlage zu erwarten sind – eine Inversion bildet sich aus. Von zwei Kaltluftseen, welche sich nur bezüglich ihrer Höhenlage unterscheiden und ansonsten identische Eigenschaften aufweisen, wird der höher gelegene tiefere absolute Minima aufweisen. In diesem Zusammenhang sind zwei Phänomene zu erwähnen:
      • mit zunehmender Höhe nimmt die Windgeschwindigkeit zu und die Wahrscheinlichkeit, dass ein Kaltluftsee turbulent durchmischt wird, steigt an. Dieser Umstand reduziert zwar die Anzahl der Fälle mit optimalen Bedingungen (zu welchen Windstille gehört), hat jedoch keinen Einfluss auf die absoluten Minima . erwähnt, dass im auf 2384 m hoch gelegenen Scheichenspitzkar im Winter 2007/2008 keine einzige vollkommen störungsfreie Strahlungsnacht aufgetreten ist – und dennoch ist am 2. Januar 2008 ein absoluter Tiefstwert von -48.4 °C registriert worden.
      • Das grossräumige Absinken in einem Hochdruckgebiet (Subsidenz) führt zur Ausbildung einer Inversion. Unterhalb der Inversion bildet sich ein grossräumiger Kaltluftsee, darüber kann die Luft ausserordentlich mild und trocken sein. Mit fortschreitender Lebensdauer eines Hochdruckgebietes sinkt diese Inversionsgrenze weiter ab. Dieses Phänomen lässt sich im Winterhalbjahr im schweizerischen Mittelland häufig in Form einer langsam absinkenden Hochnebelobergrenze beobachten. Liegt eine Geländemulde unterhalb einer Inversion, so liegt sie zwar in der kälteren Ausgangsluftmasse. Die Fähigkeit zur nächtlichen Aussstrahlung und somit zur Ausbildung eines lokalen Kaltluftsees kann jedoch durch die Bildung von Nebel oder Hochnebel reduziert sein (relativ hoher Taupunkt). Sinkt die Inversionsobergrenze durch Subsidenz unter die Höhenlage der Geländemulde ab, so kommt sie in eine wärmere Ausgangsluftmasse zu liegen. Begünstigend für die Ausbildung eines lokalen Kaltluftsees kann jedoch die häufig extrem tiefe Luftfeuchtigkeit und somit der tiefe Taupunkt sein. Unter diesen Voraussetzungen können grosse Temperaturamplituden beobachtet werden.
    • Bewaldung der Hänge: Fällt bei schwachem Windeinfluss Schnee, so bleibt dieser auf Bäumen üblicherweise eine Zeit lang liegen, bevor die Äste durch Wind- und Strahlungseinfluss entladen werden. Dabei reduziert sich die Albedo stark und die Abstrahlungsverhältisse verschlechtern sich. Je stärker die Hänge einer Senke bewaldet sind, desto stärker kommt dieser Effekt zum Tragen.
