Die geschlossene Senke auf der Alp Hintergräppelen weist vorzügliche Voraussetzungen für die Ausbildung eines Kaltluftsees aus. Vermutlich handelt es sich um eine der kältesten Stellen (wenn nicht sogar um die kälteste überhaupt) in der Nordostschweiz. Hier wurde mit -38.2 °C die tiefste Temperatur des Winters 2016/17 in der Schweiz registriert. Für eine definitive Einordnung dieser Messwerte im Vergleich mit anderen extremen Standorten in der Schweiz (z.B. Glattalp) fehlt zur Zeit noch die Basis, dazu ist eine längere Messreihe notwendig.
Lage
Das Gräppelental liegt im westlichen Alpstein im Obertoggenburg auf dem Gebiet der Gemeinde Wildhaus-Alt St. Johann. Gegen Nordwesten wird das Gräppelental durch die nördliche Alpsteinkette abgeschlossen, welche in diesem Bereich Höhen zwischen 1629 m.ü.M. (Windenpass) und 1989 m.ü.M. (Schofwisspitz) erreicht. Gegen Südosten schliessen die ersten Erhebungen der mittleren Alpsteinkette (Schwendigrat, Mittelberg, Lauiberg) das Gräppelental ab. Diese drei Erhebungen weisen Höhen zwischen 1476 und 1539 m.ü.M. auf und sind durch die beiden Übergänge Böstritt und Chrinn voneinander getrennt.
Zwischen dem Gupf und Oberstofel liegt im Gebiet Hintergräppelen eine geschlossene Senke. Sie wird unterirdisch durch ein Schluckloch entwässert, hier weist die Senke ihre maximale Tiefe von 44 m auf. Flächig – also ausserhalb der Gerinne bzw. des Schluckloches hat die Senke eine Tiefe von etwa 41 m. Der Überlaufpunkt des Kaltluftsees liegt auf einer Höhe von 1330 m.ü.M. auf dem Fahrweg Richtung Hinderwinden, überschüssige Kaltluft fliesst somit in Richtung Gräppelensee ab.

In der Lücke zwischen dem Mittelberg und dem rechts anschliessenden Schwendigrat, dem Böstritt, sind die vier Churfirsten Schibenstoll, Zuestoll, Brisi und Frümsel zu erkennen. Knapp rechts der Bildmitte liegt Oberstofel, der Übergang zur Neuenalp und nach Starkenbach hinunter. Rechts davon anschliessend sind die Gipfel der nördlichen Alpsteinkette zu erkennen. Der Überlaufpunkt des Kaltluftsees liegt nahe am linken Bildrand auf dem Fahrweg neben dem Holzgebäude, dort wo am Wegrand noch etwas Schnee liegen geblieben ist.
Entstehung
Ein Seitenarm des Rheingletschers hat während der letzten Eiszeit das Gräppelental durchflossen. Der Gupf als östlicher Abschluss der Senke wurde dabei überflossen. Der westliche Abschluss des Gräppelentals und gleichzeitig auch der Senke von Hintergräppelen wurde durch die Endmoräne des Rheingletschers gebildet . Ursprünglich war die Senke durch einen See gefüllt, bevor Karstprozesse zur Ausbildung eines Schluckloches geführt haben, welches die Senke heute unterirdisch zur Thur hin entwässert .

Wenn während der Schneeschmelze das zugeführte Wasser die Kapazität des Schlucklochs übersteigt, kann sich vorübergehend ein See in der Senke ausbilden. In dieser Phase ist die Amplitude der Temperatur gedämpft.

Der Kaltluftsee wird im Südosten durch etwas steilere Flanken (Mittelberg, Ausläufer des Schwendigrats) eingefasst, was den Sky View Faktor etwas reduziert, dafür aber im Winter zu einer gewissen Abschattung führt. Im Sektor Nord weist das Einzugsgebiet eine recht hohe Reliefenergie auf. Trotzdem hat das Einzugsgebiet – verglichen mit dem Sämtisersee -nicht nur entlang der Talachse einen weiten, offenen Charakter.

Messungen im Gebiet
Wie vom Sämtisersee sind auch von Hintergräppelen keine Messungen aus der Vergangenheit bekannt. Es gibt jedoch verschiedene qualitative Beobachtungen, welche Hinweise darauf geben, dass die Senke bei Hintergräppelen ein sehr gut funktionierender Kaltluftsee ist ( z.B. http://www.hikr.org/gallery/photo932784.html ).
Am 11. September 2016 wurde in Hintergräppelen eine provisorische Station installiert. Die Aufstellung etwa 5 m über dem Boden der Senke war für die Erfassung der Minimaltemperaturen nicht optimal. Es ist zu vermuten, dass die bis zum 24. November in Strahlungsnächten registrierten Minima eher einen oberen Grenzwert darstellen. Für die Aufzeichnung wurde ein Datenlogger der Firma Gemini (Tinytag Talk 2 TK-4023 ) verwendet, welcher in einem passiv ventilierten Strahlungsschutz untergebracht war. Aus logistischen Gründen war der Speicherintervall auf 20 Minuten eingestellt, d.h. alle 20 Minuten wurde der Momentanwert sowie das Minimum bzw. das Maximum über die vorangegangen 20 Minuten aufgezeichnet. Diese Station wurde am 27. September 2017 wieder abgebaut.
Am 24. November 2016 wurde in der Nähe der tiefsten Stelle der Senke eine definitive Station erstellt. Sie besteht aus einem Datenlogger (Tinytag Plus 2 TGP-4104 ), an welchen ein externer PT100-Sensor angeschlossen ist. Bedingt durch die höhere Speicherkapazität wurde das Speicherintervall auf 10 Minuten festgesetzt. Beide Komponenten sind für die Messung extrem tiefer Temperaturen ausgelegt (Betriebstemperatur: -40°C, Sensorik: -50°C). Der Sensor ist durch einen aktiv ventilierten Strahlungsschutz der Firma Lambrecht geschützt, welcher seinerseits durch ein Solarmodul gespiesen wird.
Installiert wurde die Temperaturmessstation an einem Teleskopmast, welcher in einer Bodenhülse angebracht und auf zwei Höhen dreifach abgespannt wurde. Die Messhöhe von 2.5 m über Boden weicht von den in der Schweiz üblichen 2 m ab, was insbesondere durch die Hochwassersicherheit und die grossen zu erwartenden Schneehöhen begründet ist.
Seit dem 27. September 2017 ist an der Hauptstation in der Senke ein Echtzeitsensor der Firma Decentlab installiert , welcher alle 2 Minuten Messwerte der Temperatur und der Luftfeuchtigkeit liefert. Die Daten können hier abgerufen werden. Die Sensorik ist bei diesem Gerät seit Juli 2019 in einem sehr guten, passiv ventilierten Strahlungsschutzgehäuse der Firma Barani Design untergebracht. Die Erfahrungen zeigen, dass die Abweichung zwischen den aktiv ventilierten Messwerten des Datenloggers und den passiv ventilierten Messwerten der Sensoreinheit von Decentlab typischerweise weniger als 0.5 K betragen.
Ebenfalls am 27. September 2017 wurde gut 35 m über dem Überlaufpunkt der Senke am Nordhang des Mittelberges eine Nebenstation installiert. Mit dieser Nebenstation kann die Stärke der Inversion in Hintergräppelen bestimmt werden. Für die Aufzeichnung wird ein Datenlogger der Firma Gemini (Tinytag Talk 2 TK-4023 ) verwendet, welcher in einem passiv ventilierten Strahlungsschutz untergebracht ist. Aus logistischen Gründen ist der Speicherintervall auf 20 Minuten eingestellt, d.h. alle 20 Minuten werden der Momentanwert sowie das Minimum bzw. das Maximum über die vorangegangen 20 Minuten aufgezeichnet. Der Pfahl wurde mit einer Einschlagbodenhülse im Boden verankert und mit Steinen stabilisiert, welche wohl einen zusätzlichen Strahlungsfehler verursachen.
Bei der Wahl der Messstandorte wurde versucht, den Vorschriften der World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) möglichst nahe zu kommen und eine möglichst niedrige (d.h. gute) Klassifikation nach Leroy zu erreichen. Einschränkungen bei der Aufstellung der Hauptstation in der Senke ergaben sich durch die folgenden Gründe:
Die Sensorik soll hochwassersicher angebracht sein. Wie erwähnt, kann sich im tiefsten Bereich der Senke während der Schneeschmelze ein temporärer See ausbilden.
Die Sensorik soll auch bei grossen Schneehöhen nicht eingeschneit werden (Für die Abschätzung dienen die nahe gelegenen SLF-Stationen Schwägalp bzw. Iltios , in der Wintersaison sind zusätzlich zu den aktuellen Messwerten hier auch die maximal gemessenen Schneehöhen sichtbar)
Schutz vor Beschädigung (weidendes Vieh)
Die Senke liegt in einer Moorlandschaft von nationaler Bedeutung. Die Bewilligung war nur für einen Standort erhältlich, welcher ausserhalb der sensibelsten Gebiete liegt.
