Knapp 6 Jahre nach ihrer Erstellung wurde der Mast der Station in Hintergräppelen ersetzt. Zudem wurde das Messprogramm mit einem Gerät zur Schneemessung ergänzt.
Im November 2016 wurde die Station auf einem Teleskopmast aus Aluminium, der mit einer Schraubbodenhülse im Boden verankert war und auf zwei Höhen mit Drahtseilen abgespannt war, errichtet:

Beraten und unterstützt von Turi Kunz und Michi Kopp, zwei ausgewiesenen Experten und Praktikern in Sachen Bau und Unterhalt von Wetterstationen, war die damalige Installation darauf ausgelegt, einen Datenlogger, einen Strahlungsschutz sowie ein Solarmodul zur Speisung der Ventilation zu tragen – und zwar zu einem vertretbaren Gesamtpreis.
Über die Zeit wurde die Station um weitere Geräte ergänzt, es folgten ein Gerät zur Messung und Übermittlung von Temperatur und Luftfeuchtigkeit in Echtzeit von Decentlab , dessen Sensor in einem sehr guten passiven Strahlungsschutz von Barani Design untergebracht wurde.
Juli 2019: Es wird eng am Mast – er trägt nun auch ein Gerät von Decentlab (Echtzeit-Messung und Übermittlung von Temperatur und Feuchte) sowie einen Strahlungsschutz von Barani.
Hinzu kamen die speziellen Bedingungen an diesem Standort. Der westliche Alpstein ist bekanntermassen schneereich – und eine Schneedecke „arbeitet“ mit der Zeit (Schneekriechen und Schneegleiten). Ein Teleskopmast aus Aluminium hat dem kaum etwas entgegenzusetzen:

Neben der Schrägstellung des Mastes ist auch der Winkel der Abspannseile auf den beiden Winterbildern im Vergleich mit der ersten Abbildung zu beachten: Was passiert hier?
In der Senke von Hintergräppelen liegt ein Flachmoor (keine Angst: die Position der Station ist so gewählt, dass sie auf der Weide und nicht im Schutzgebiet liegt) und dementsprechend gross ist die Vernässung des Bodens. Dies zeigt sich auch an den regelmässig stattfindenden Überflutungen der Senke bei starken Niederschlägen (ggf. in Kombination mit Schneeschmelze):
Tauflut im März 2020: Regen und Schneeschmelze liefern mehr Wasser, als das Schluckloch abzuführen vermag – es staut sich ein See auf.
Es gibt gute Gründe, weshalb der Logger eine hohe Schutzklasse aufweisen muss…
Auch wenn in Hintergräppelen die Lufttemperatur weit unter -30 °C liegen kann: durch die Isolationswirkung der Schneedecke liegt die basale Schneetemperatur bei 0 °C – der Boden ist also nicht gefroren.
Die Drahtseile der Abspannung frieren nun am Schnee fest und im Verlaufe des Winters wird der Teleskopmast einerseits zusammengeschoben und andererseits wird er 30 – 40 cm in den weichen und feuchten Boden getrieben. Nach der Schneeschmelze sieht das dann ungefähr so aus:
Die Abspannseile erfüllen ihren Zweck nicht mehr: weil der Mast gute 40 cm tiefer im Boden steckt als noch zu Beginn des Winters, hängen sie schlaff herunter.
Kurz zusammengefasst: An einem trockenen, weit herum ebenen Standort würde der Mast seinen Zweck einwandfrei erfüllen. Für Hintergräppelen musste jedoch eine andere Lösung gefunden werden.
Das Messen in bzw. die Erforschung von Kaltluftseen ist und bleibt ein Hobby, dementsprechend ist der Aufwand bezüglich Zeit und Ressourcen limitiert – und die Idee einer Masterneuerung blieb längere Zeit liegen.
Auf Einladung des Vereins LoT (Lebenswertes obersters Toggenburg) durfte ich Ende April 2022 in Wildhaus einen Vortrag über den Kaltluftsee von Hintergräppelen halten.
Im Nachgang zu diesem Vortrag ergab sich der Kontakt zu Peter Diener, Vorsitzender der Lawinenfachkommission Wildhaus – Alt St. Johann. Der Lawinenfachkommission obliegt die Überwachung der Lawinensituation auf dem Gemeindegebiet. Sie kann die Sperrung/Öffnung von Strassen und Wegen anordnen und berät bei einer erhöhten Gefährdung den Gemeindeführungsstab bezüglich weitergehenden Massnahmen.
In der Diskussion mit Peter Diener zeigte sich, das wir gemeinsame Interessen haben:
Für mich war neben der Erneuerung des Mastes zusätzliche Informationen zur Schneehöhe ein lange gehegter Wunsch für die Beurteilung des Potentials für extrem tiefe Temperaturen.
Die Lawinenfachkommission war an Schneedaten aus dem Gräppelental interessiert, um die Grundlagen für die Beurteilung der Lawinensituation zu ergänzen.
Aus den gemeinsamen Bedürfnissen wurde schnell ein gemeinsames Projekt: Am 1. September fand eine gemeinsame Reko vor Ort statt und am 21. September errichteten Peter Diener und sein Stellvertreter Norbert Fischbacher unmittelbar neben der bestehenden Station einen solide verankerten und stabilen Mast aus einem Gerüstrohr und einem Führungsrohr mit Standfuss.

In der Zwischenzeit konnten ich erste Tests mit einem optischen Distanzmessgerät von Decentlab durchführen, welches als Sensor einen LIDAR von Garmin nutzt. Dazu wurde eine Versuchsanlage auf dem eigenen Gartensitzplatz errichtet:

Ein separater Beitrag wird sich den technischen Herausforderungen bei der automatischen Schneehöhenmessung widmen – die ersten Erkenntnisse zeigen jedoch, dass es eine Vielzahl von Faktoren gibt, welche die Güte der Messung beeinflussen:
Vibration des Mastes bei Wind.
unterschiedliches Reflektionsverhalten (Reflektivität) des Messobjektes (Erdoberfläche)
Hebung/Senkung des Bodens bei (flüssigem) Niederschlag und Temperaturänderungen (z.B. Frosthebung)
Diese Einflussfaktoren können nicht vollständig eliminiert werden, auch deren Reduktion ist mit sehr grossem Aufwand verbunden (z.B. Messobjekt starr mit Mast verbunden).
Am 13. Oktober konnte dann die Station vom alten auf den neuen Mast gezügelt werden. Hintergräppelen empfing mich standesgemäss mit einem Anblick, der zeigt, wie räumlich eng begrenzt das Phänomen „Kaltluftsee“ ist:
Oben grün, unten weiss – oben mild, unten kalt: Die Temperaturumkehr im Kaltluftsee wird durch den Reif im Gelände sichtbar.

Der grüne Rasenteppich (mit Erdnägeln am Boden fixiert) dient dazu, dass während schneefreien Zeiten ein möglichst guter Nullpunkt für die Distanzmessung vorhanden ist.
Sobald Erfahrungen mit der Distanzmessung an diesem Standort vorhanden sind, werden die Daten auf dieser Seite verfügbar gemacht.
