Auf der Glattalp wird im Schnitt in jedem dritten Jahr eine Temperatur von unter -40 °C registriert. Am 7. Februar 1991 wurde eine Temperatur von -52.5 °C gemessen – der tiefste bisher bekannte Wert aus der Schweiz. Er liegt nur um 0.1 K höher als der Kälterekord in Mitteleuropa, welcher im Grünloch auf der Gstettneralm in Niederösterreich im Zeitraum zwischen dem 19. Februar und dem 4. März 1932 gemessen wurde .
Lage
Die Glattalp liegt hoch über dem Bisistal auf dem Gemeindegebiet von Muotatal. Gegen Süden wird die Glattalp durch eine Bergkette abgeschlossen, welche praktisch durchwegs über 2400 m hoch ist und an ihrem östlichen Ende mit dem Ortstock (2717 m. ü. M.) ihre höchste Erhebung aufweist. Die nördliche Begrenzung ist etwas weniger hoch (Grossbodenkreuz mit 2056 m. ü. M. im Westen und Höch Turm mit 2665 m. ü. M. im Osten). Die südexponierten Flanken sind im Schnitt auch weniger steil als die Hänge auf der gegenüberliegenden Seite. Den östlichen Talabschluss bildet die Furggele (2394 m. ü. M.), der Übergang von der Glattalp nach Braunwald. Die Talachse der Glattalp verläuft ungefähr von WSW nach ENE.

Die Glattalp ist in mehrere Mulden gegliedert:
Im hinteren Bereich der Glattalp liegt der Glattalpsee . Der tiefste Punkt der Mulde schwankt mit dem Wasserspiegel des Glattalpsees. Auf den aktuellsten Karten von Swisstopo wird dessen Höhenlage mit 1851 m. ü. M. angegeben. Seine Fläche beträgt bei diesem Wasserstand ungefähr 0.28 km2 und die Senke ist etwa 12 m tief.
Die Läcki, eine Geländekuppe, welche an ihrem höchsten Punkt gut 1900 m. ü. M. erreicht, trennt das Becken des Glattalpsees vom Schafffärch im vorderen Bereich der Glattalp. Dieses Gebiet ist stark vernässt und bildet den Versickerungsraum für den Vorderen Läckibach. Der tiefste Punkt liegt im vordersten (sprich: westlichsten) Teil auf ca. 1848 m.ü.M., unmittelbar vor dem Abschluss der Glattalp Richtung Bisistal. Die Senke weist an ihrer niedrigsten Stelle eine Tiefe von ca. 15 m auf. Im Schaffärch steht auf einem Betriebsgebäude der ebs Energie AG die Wetterstation von MeteoGroup.
Das Seeloch , südlich der Läcki gelegen, verbindet das Becken des Glattalpsees mit dem Schaffärch. Der tiefste Punkt liegt auf ca. 1844 m. ü. M, die Senke ist an ihrer tiefsten Stelle gut 19 m tief.
Etwas nach Süden abgesetzt liegt der Schafboden . Der tiefste Punkt liegt auf 1847 m. ü. M. und mit einer Höhendifferenz von fast 24 m zum Überlaufpunkt handelt es sich um die tiefste Senke auf der Glattalp.
Die Senken des Glattalpsee, des Seeloch und des Schaffärch bilden ein gemeinsames System. Die Senke des Schafboden liegt etwas höher, überfliessende Kaltluft ergiesst sich ins Seeloch.
Entstehung
Das Gebiet zwischen Klausenpass und Pragelpass ist das grösste Karstgebiet in der Schweiz. Es gehört zu den nördlichen Kalkalpen (vgl. auch Geologische Vektordatensätze GeoCover (1:25000Bundesamt für Landestopografie swisstopo: https://map.geo.admin.ch/?topic=geol&lang=de&bgLayer=ch.swisstopo.pixelkarte-grau&layers=ch.swisstopo.geologie-geocover&X=198057.00&Y=710363.00&zoom=6 ). beschreiben die Entstehung des Glattalptales wie folgt:
„Neben offensichtlichen hydrologischen Längstälern zwischen Bergketten tritt in den helvetischen Kalkalpen der östlichen Zentralschweiz ein Kombinationstyp auf: Beim Vorgleiten der Jurakerne der Druesberg-Decke, die als Höchturm-Schuppe über die Ortstock-Schuppe hinweg fuhr, verblieb auch ihre Unterlage, weiche Unterkreide-Gesteine der ursprünglich nördlicheren Axendecke, nicht verschont. An klaffender Längsstörung riss diese im W gegen die weite Quer-Depression, durch welche die Druesberg-Kreide mit den östlichen Zentralschweizer Klippen nach N vorgefahren ist, immer stärker auf. Seit der Platznahme der Decken vor 5 Ma stiess der Glattalp-Gletscher in Kühl- und Kaltzeiten von der Ortstock-Kette durch die vorgezeichnete Längsfurche und räumte das Lockergut der Schwächezone aus. Seither hat er in den tektonische auseinander gerissenen wenig resistenten Gesteinen der unteren Kreide ein 300m tiefes Tal ausgehoben.“

Das Beispiel der Glattalp zeigt, dass es für sehr tiefe Temperaturen nicht in erster Linie einen möglichst tiefen Kaltluftsee braucht, sondern dass ein möglichst hoher Sky View Factor massgebend ist.
Die grösste Mächtigkeit hat der Kaltluftsee im Seeloch, an seiner tiefsten Stelle ist er hier 19 m tief. Im Bereich des Betriebsgebäudes der EBS Energie AG, wo die Station der MeteoGroup steht, ist er nur 14 m tief. Zu berücksichtigen ist, dass die Messstation mehrere Meter über dem Boden angebracht ist, sodass der Messfühler weniger als 10 m in den voll ausgebildeten Kaltluftsee eintaucht.
Das Gesamtsystem weist einen Sky View Factor von etwa 0.9 auf, wobei dieser vom hinteren Ende des Glattalpsees (Werte um 0.85) talauswärts zum Schaffärch (verbreitet Werte um 0.95) hin zunimmt.
Im Bereich des Seelochs dürfte sich eine Störung durch überfliessende Kaltluft aus dem Schafboden ergeben. Die Läcki wirkt wahrscheinlich als Riegel, welcher den Schaffärch vor allem in einer frühen Phase der Ausbildung des Kaltluftsees gut gegen das Becken des Glattalpsees abschirmt. Hierbei handelt es sich jedoch um Vermutungen, der genaue Einfluss der dreiteiligen Kammerung des Kaltluftsees auf der Glattalp auf die Tiefstwerte wäre mittels zusätzlicher Messungen und Modellierungen genauer zu untersuchen.
Messungen
1970 wurde durch die EBS Energie AG (vormals: Elektrizitätswerk des Bezirks Schwyz) das Kraftwerk Sahli-Glattalp in Betrieb genommen. Dieses nutzt das Wasser des zuvor abgedichteten Glattalpsees. Regelmässige Messungen werden auf der Glattalp seit 1974 durchgeführt. In einer ersten Phase handelte es sich um Handablesungen von Niederschlag, Temperaturen (Minimum & Maximum) und Schneehöhe. Öffentlich zugänglich sind die Jahresminima der Temperatur ab 1984 (https://glattalp.ch/cms/upload/dokumente/glattalp_wetterdaten.pdf ). Die genauen Messumstände sind noch nicht abschliessend recherchiert. Aufgrund der dokumentierten Temperaturen ist jedoch davon auszugehen, dass ein Alkoholthermometer zum Einsatz gekommen ist. Mitte der 1990er Jahre hat die EBS die erste elektronische Wetterstation auf der Glattalp errichtet, im Jahr 1996 wurde dann in Kooperation mit der Firma Meteomedia (heute MeteoGroup) eine neue automatische Messstation errichtet .
Messinstrumente auf bzw. am Betriebsgebäude der EBS Schwyz. Links auf dem Dach befindet sich ein Niederschlagstotalisator, welcher zum Messnetz von MeteoSchweiz gehört. Rechts neben dem Fenster ist eine kleine Klimahütte. Hier wurde der Rekordwert von -52.5 °C gemessen. Seit 1996 betreibt die MeteoGroup eine automatische Messstation (Mast auf dem Dach).

Die automatische Station liegt um einige Meter höher als die alte, an der Fassade des Betriebsgebäudes angebrachten Wetterhütte. Das resultiert vermutlich in etwas höheren Minima gegenüber der Messung an der Fassade. Nur in einem Fall seit 1970 betrug das Jahresmaximum der Gesamtschneehöhe weniger als 2 m.
