Bildung und Auflösung eines Kaltluftsees

Die Prozesse, welche zur Bildung und Auflösung eines Kaltluftsees in einer geschlossenen Senke führen, werden hier näher beschrieben. In einem ersten Schritt wird der Idealfall im Sommerhalbjahr, wenn kein Schnee liegt, beschrieben. Die Prozessbeschreibung lehnt sich an die Diplomarbeit von an, deren Lektüre für jeden, der an Kaltluftseen interessiert ist, unbedingt empfohlen wird.

Ausgangspunkt ist ein sonniger Nachmittag. Die Sonne steht nicht mehr im Zenit, aber noch ist die Strahlungsbilanz positiv und es werden die höchsten Lufttemperaturen des Tages gemessen. Normalerweise nimmt die Lufttemperatur mit der Höhe ab. Das ist im Moment auch in der betrachteten Senke der Fall: Die Atmosphäre ist durch konvektive Prozesse durchmischt.

Mit dem langsam tiefer werdenden Sonnenstand werden immer mehr Gebietsanteile nicht mehr durch die Sonne beschienen. Dort wird die Strahlungsbilanz negativ: die Oberflächen und somit auch die bodennahen Luftschichten beginnen auszukühlen. Sobald die Sonne ganz unter dem Horizont verschwindet, fällt die direkte kurzwellige Einstrahlung gänzlich weg. Während der Dämmerung verbleibt ein geringer (und immer kleiner werdender) Anteil an diffuser Einstrahlung. Durch die noch hohen Oberflächentemperaturen ist die Abstrahlung von langwelliger Infrarotstrahlung und somit die Abkühlung maximal.

Die oberflächennahe Kaltluftschicht, welche an den Hängen der Senke gebildet wird, weist eine vergleichsweise hohe Dichte auf und fliesst, der Schwerkraft folgend, abwärts. Abhängig von der Hangneigung und der Oberflächenrauhigkeit werden dabei Windgeschwindigkeit von 1 – 4 m/s erreicht, dieses Maximum wird 1 – 3 m über dem Boden registriert . Dieser rein gravitativ angetriebene Wind wird auch als katabatischer Wind bezeichnet. Man hat beobachtet, dass diese lokal produzierte Kaltluft paketweise in Intervallen von 1 bis 5 Minuten abgleitet. Auf dem Boden der Senke angekommen, kann die Luft nicht weiter abfliessen. Die kälteste und somit „schwerste“ Luft sammelt sich in einer ersten Phase zuunterst an. Diese unterste Luftschicht in der Senke kühlt immer weiter aus, neu produzierte und nachgelieferte Kaltluft aus den Hanglagen des Einzugsgebietes ist nicht ganz so kalt und schichtet sich über der kältesten Luft ein: Der Kaltluftsee beginnt sich auszubilden und wächst von unten her an.

Wird der Kaltluftsee nicht gestört (grossräumige Windsysteme oder Wolkenaufzug), so entkoppelt sich der Kaltluftsee von der restlichen Atmosphäre und es lässt sich eine Temperaturumkehr oder -inversion beobachten: Im Gegensatz zum Nachmittag steigt die Temperatur mit zunehmender Höhe bis zur Obergrenze des Kaltluftsees an. gibt beobachtete Temperaturgradienten von 0.2 – 0.3 K/m im Sommer und von 0.3 bis zu 1 K/m bei Schneebedeckung im Winter an.

Mit zunehmender Auskühlung wird, abhängig vom Feuchtigkeitsgehalt der Luft, üblicherweise in der ersten Nachthälfte der Taupunkt erreicht. Das ist die Temperatur, bei welcher die Luft bei einem gegebenen absoluten Wassergehalt gesättigt ist. Sinkt die Temperatur weiter, so wird das überschüssige Wasser der untersten Luftschicht in Form von Tau oder Reif an der Oberfläche abgelagert. Bei diesem Kondensationsprozess wird Wärme freigesetzt und an die Atmosphäre abgegeben, was die  weitere Abkühlung verlangsamt. Andererseits wird der Atmosphäre diese Feuchtigkeit entzogen, was die atmosphärische Gegenstrahlung reduziert.

Kurz vor Sonnenaufgang werden die tiefsten Temperaturen gemessen. Mit dem Aufgang der Sonne wird die Strahlungsbilanz wieder positiv. Sonnenexponierte Hänge beginnen sich zu erwärmen, hier steigt die Luft auf und es setzt eine Zirkulation ein. Im Gegensatz zu einer Badewanne, bei welcher das Wasser durch den Abfluss ausläuft und der Wasserspiegel aus diesem Grund sinkt, sinkt die Oberfläche bzw. die Inversion des Kaltluftsees ab, weil durch die Sonneneinstrahlung günstig exponierte Hänge erwärmt werden, die Luft dort aufsteigt und dem Kaltluftsee somit entzogen wird.

Auf dem Grund der Senke wird die durch die Sonneneinstrahlung zugeführte Energie zu einem grossen Teil dafür aufgewendet, Reif und Tau zu verdunsten. Dieser Phasenübergang des Wassers ist dermassen energieaufwändig, dass sich die Luft erst nach Abschluss signifikant zu erwärmen beginnt.

Abweichungen vom typischen Verlauf im Sommerhalbjahr

    • erhöhter Feuchtigkeitsgehalt der Luft / Wolken: Oben wurde beschrieben, dass die Temperatur beim Absinken unter den Taupunkt das überschüssige Wasser in Form von Tau bzw. Reif an der Oberfläche ablagert. Findet der Kondensationsprozess nicht an der Oberfläche, sondern in der Luft statt, so entsteht Strahlungsnebel. Dies ist der Fall, wenn der Wasserdampfgehalt der Luft zum Beispiel durch vorangegangene Niederschläge erhöht ist. Auch eine Feuchtequelle in Form eines Gewässers erhöht die Wahrscheinlichkeit für die Bildung von Nebel. Nebel erhöht die langwellige atmosphärische Gegenstrahlung: Der Temperaturrückgang wird noch stärker als bei der Bildung von Tau oder Reif gedrosselt, üblicherweise steigt die Temperatur sogar wieder etwas an. Das gleiche Resultat, nämlich eine reduzierte Abstrahlung, erzeugen nicht aufliegende Wolken, sei dies Hochnebel oder Bewölkung, welche mit einer Störung verbunden sind.
    • Wind: Die Ausbildung eines Kaltluftsees bedingt windschwache bzw. idealerweise windstille Bedingungen. Je ausgeprägter die übergeordnete, grossräumige Windströmung (Föhn, Bise, Westwind) ist, desto wahrscheinlicher ist die Erosion des Kaltluftsees durch eine turbulente Durchmischung. Nähere Ausführungen finden sich zum Beispiel in
    • Schnee: Schnee auf dem Boden führt dazu, dass bereits tagsüber ein grosser Anteil der einfallenden Strahlung reflektiert wird und nicht zur Erwärmung des Bodens verwendet werden kann. Unter idealen Bedingungen reicht die Einstrahlung nicht aus, um die einmal gebildete Inversion tagsüber aufzulösen. Im Bereich der infraroten Wärmestrahlung strahlt Neuschnee praktisch wie ein idealer schwarzer Körper, die Schneeoberfläche kühlt daher sehr effizient aus. Zentral sind jedoch die ausserordentlich guten Isolationseigenschaften von Schnee. Schnee ist eigentlich ein Konglomerat von Eis, Luft und Wasser. Eine niedrige Dichte der Schneedecke ist gleichbedeutend mit einem hohen Luftanteil – dieser ist bei Neuschnee am höchsten. Typische Werte für Neuschnee betragen um 100 kg/m3, für Wildschnee (extrem trockener, lockerer Schnee, der bei tiefen Temperaturen fällt) werden sogar Werte um 30 kg/m3 registriert, vgl. z.B. Glossar der EAWS. Zudem ist frisch gefallener Neuschnee ist relativ locker und weist hervorragende Isolationseigenschaften auf. Bereits 10 cm Schnee reichen aus, um sehr grosse Temperaturunterschiede zwischen Basis und Oberfläche der Schneedecke zu realisieren. Der aus dem Erdinnern gegen aussen gerichtete geothermische Wärmestrom wird wirkungsvoll unterbunden. Neuschnee setzt sich relativ schnell und die Isolationswirkung lässt dann nach. Daher werden die tiefsten Minima normalerweise am ersten Tag mit guten Strahlungsverhältnissen nach einem Neuschneeereignis beobachtet.
